Clipper Voiles FAQ: Answers to Your Sailmaking, Rigging & Upholstery Questions!

At the Clipper Voiles loft in Frontignan, boat owners and sailing enthusiasts ask us great technical questions every day.

To help you care for your boat and carry out your custom projects, we have put together this complete guide covering the most frequently asked questions in sailmaking, rigging, marine upholstery, and shade sails! (Check out the full visual carousel directly on our Instagram and Facebook pages).

⛵ Sailmaking & Maintenance

  • What is the average lifespan of a sail?

Count around 10 years for a cruising sail made of quality cloth (such as Dacron), provided it receives regular rinsing and maintenance. Lifespan mostly depends on usage: sailing hours, UV exposure, and how sails are flaked and stored between trips.

  • Do you work on all types of boats?

Absolutely! Cruising yachts, motorboats, racing sailboats, or small crafts: our team adapts to the specific needs of every single boat.

🧵 Marine Upholstery

  • Do you remake cockpit cushions and seating?

Of course! Custom marine upholstery is a core part of our craft (cockpit cushions, sprayhoods, biminis). Bonus for riders: we also custom upholster motorbike seats!

⚓ Standing & Running Rigging

  • How often should I replace my standing rigging?

The general rule recommended by professionals and insurance companies is to replace stainless steel standing rigging every 10 years. However, it also depends on your sailing conditions: regular visual inspections of wires and swages remain the best safety guarantee.

  • What is the difference between standing rigging and running rigging?

    • Standing rigging: Fixed wires supporting the mast (forestay, backstay, shrouds).

    • Running rigging: Moving lines used to hoist, trim, and adjust your sails (halyards, sheets, reefing lines...).

☀️ Shade Sails & Custom Projects

  • Which fabric should I choose for a patio shade sail?

We strongly recommend HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) fabric. It blocks up to 95%-98% of UV rays depending on color, withstands strong winds, and allows air circulation to maintain cool temperatures beneath the sail.

  • Do you make custom shade sails for unique architectural shapes?

That is actually our specialty! We design and manufacture custom shade sails tailor-made for any layout (private patios, commercial venues, and public installations for the town of Frontignan).

  • How long does an HDPE shade sail last?

An HDPE shade sail maintains effective UV protection for around 10 years, and even longer with proper winter storage.

🤝 Bonus Question...

  • Can I drop by just for advice without buying anything?

Of course! Clipper Voiles is all about sharing marine passion. Whether you have a precise project in mind or just want to discuss your boat over a coffee, our door is always open.
