Sailboat Unmasting: Behind the Scenes of a High-Precision Operation at Clipper Voiles

Routine boat maintenance sometimes requires impressive operations that demand absolute rigor. Recently, the Clipper Voiles team gathered at the Frontignan harbor technical zone for a high-precision task: unstepping a sailboat mast.

Whether it is for a complete refit, replacing standing rigging, or winter storage, removing a mast requires professional expertise. Here is a look back at a perfectly executed operation by our team.

Step 1: Meticulous Deck Preparation

Before the crane even moves, the work begins on the deck. This phase is vital to ensure the safety of both the crew and the vessel:

  • Clearing the lines: Halyards, sheets, and reefing lines are carefully organized and cleared to prevent any snagging during the lift.

  • Disconnecting electronics: All cables for masthead instruments (anemometer, navigation lights, antennas) are disconnected.

  • Loosening the rigging: Turnbuckles on shrouds, stays, and backstays are untensioned and detached cleanly.

Step 2: Delicate Crane Lifting

Once the boat is ready, the harbor crane takes over. The crane operator lifts the mast smoothly, centimeter by centimeter.

Simultaneously, the ground crew manages the perfect alignment and supports the structure to prevent any swaying that could damage the deck or the mast itself. This is true teamwork where clear communication is key.

Step 3: Placing on the Cradle

Mission accomplished! The mast is gently laid horizontally onto specialized dollies. It is now ready to be thoroughly inspected by our rigging specialists.

Did you know? Inspecting your standing rigging regularly (every 10 to 15 years depending on usage) is essential to prevent accidental dismasting at sea.
