Hey there, skippers! Today, the Clipper Voiles team is tackling a technical mistake we see all too often on boats. While it comes from a good intention, it can be absolutely catastrophic for your rigging.

We have all seen them or perhaps you even have them on your own boat: those plastic or canvas turnbuckle covers neatly laced up at the base of your shrouds. They are usually installed to prevent sails from chafing against the hardware or to protect the threads from the elements.

But in reality, it’s a dangerous trap. Here is why:

• The "Greenhouse" Effect: These covers do not keep water out. During heavy seas or rainy days, saltwater seeps right through. Once inside, it has nowhere to go. Combined with the heat of the sun, it creates a perfect, high-humidity incubation capsule.

• Hidden Corrosion: Denied oxygen and trapped in stagnant moisture, the stainless steel wire rope begins to rot, and the turnbuckle suffocates. Furthermore, the covers shield the hardware from the sun, preventing natural drying and UV sterilization.

• Out of Sight, Out of Mind: The biggest threat is that the structural damage happens completely hidden from your eyes. A compromised turnbuckle or swage terminal can easily lead to a catastrophic dismasting.

How Should You Actually Protect Your Rigging?

The only real protection is routine! A healthy rig requires open exposure and regular inspection:

1. Ditch the covers: Remove any canvas or plastic turnbuckle protectors immediately.

2. Let it breathe: Let your turnbuckles dry out naturally in the open air and sunlight.

3. Freshwater rinse: Wash down your turnbuckles and the bottom of your shrouds with fresh water after every single sail to flush out salt deposits.
